The Vel Maral Maha Mantram is a powerful devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Murugan, specifically invoking the protection and strength of his divine spear, the Vel. It is a rearranged form of the "Vel Vaguppu" verses from the Thiruppugazh, originally composed by the saint Arunagirinathar. Origin and Purpose Compilation: The current format was compiled by Vallimalai Sri Sachidananda Swamigal.Significance: It is considered a "Maha Mantram" because of its perceived ability to remove negative energies, fear, and physical or mental ailments. Benefits: Devotees recite it to seek victory over internal and external enemies, spiritual protection, and overall well-being.The "Maral" Method. The term "Maral" refers to the unique, complex structure of the recitation: The original 16 verses are rearranged and repeated in a specific sequence—forward, backwards, ascending, and descending.
